Platinum scales glint
while packs of silver bodies flounder through unforgiving currents in attempts to reach a vast indigo paradise, the ocean. The young fish feed, grow, mature, their lustrous grey becoming a vibrant blood red, signaling to them their end, their final journey in life. They struggle through the raging tides on their way back upstream, battling the powerful jets with their sword-like fins, in their duel against death – until suddenly, the sockeye perceive a searing ache, a sharp jab in each of their sides; their blood is spilled like paint, coloring the once-translucent water with a brilliant scarlet, while their world shifts into absolute black.
In a bustling restaurant kitchen, a sharp silver knife clanks noisily against a wooden cutting board, Slicing pieces of salmon to lay upon rice, a warrior’s grave.
To think the noble sockeyes' final resting place would be atop a sushi conveyor belt.
