Standing at the doorway while guests entered my party, I was delighted to see Jay Gatsby’s Rolls Royce flow onto the scene like molten gold. Gatsby stepped out of the automobile with a tinkling, musical smile upon his face. I immediately rushed over and grasped his hand firmly, thinking sentimentally of my memories with Gatsby. After welcoming my dear friend to the celebration, I surveyed the wild scene before my eyes. Immense displays of wealth were visible everywhere, but the wealth had a certain taste of corruption.
I made my money gambling, and I associate with many shady characters. Looking closely, one could spot money changing between men who glanced cautiously around with green eyes. The band played red music that dripped slowly from the instruments, and the people drank freely, uninhibited. All around, the half-naked dancers moved with rough grace.
My eyes drifted across six men lounging around the gambling table in the center of the extravagant party hall clothed only in red or black suits of the finest linen. Looking at them, one could immediately sense their wealth, but also an air of recklessness.
I sauntered over to the table and took a seat next to a small, weaselly man with an extraordinarily large nose. After introductions, I asked the crooked gentlemen for a very high-stakes game; the pot would be $100,000. The eyes of the men lit up like jackals about to devour a carcass, and they accepted my offer.
The game began, and the atmosphere immediately grew tense. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Large-Nose slip a card up his sleeve, but I did not breathe a word. However, another man at the table had seen the cheating act. In a soft, cutting voice that boomed across the table, the man in the black suit ordered Large-Nose to return the card.
Lying through his teeth, Large-Nose denied taking a card. Emotions erupted and the sound of red shouting pierced the air. Suddenly, a single shot rang out and all grew as quiet as a graveyard. I turned to my left and watched as crimson appeared on Large-Nose’s shirt. It was a beautiful and horrible thing as the darkness spread across the man and enveloped him in a deathly embrace.
As it dawned on the guests that a man had just been killed, all hell broke loose. Amidst the chaos, screams, and commotion, I grabbed the money from the middle of the table, and glided away from the scene like the angel of death claiming his reward.
