I am from endless stormy days, and long rounds of cards through the black night I am from the poker chips in my grandfather’s hands and talking with our mouths full I am from rippling ponds and climbing the neighbors’ trees, plucking plums off the ground alongside a golden retriever I am from hidden groves in the park, and twirling dandelions and mashing sour blackberries I am from windy days at Flat Point Beach, and ice cream at Hilly Acres, from racing down the snowy peaks of Schweitzer and a scraped scag on the boat motor I am from Lego Christmas villages and cinnamon on lefse dishes and the giddy joy of discovering a special almond in my rice pudding I am from wreaths with candles and Swedish songs and little knickknacks around my grandmother's house I am from heart-racing walks under the street lamps and climbing on the roof; dangerous, free I am from the mac and cheese at Endolyne Joe's and play dates, drinking milkshakes I am from “I Hope You Dance” and "a five, six, seven, eight" I am from ripped out pages of notebooks and books sprawled across the ground, words written in black ink that I can no longer conjure
